The premise is so strong, giving Mary Bennet a real voice and inner life, and there are moments where it almost hits exactly right. Her self-awareness, her loneliness, the way she knows she doesn’t quite fit anywhere, all of that comes through clearly and sometimes painfully.
But the story lingers too long in the same emotional space. The repetition wore me down. I kept waiting for stronger movement, sharper turns, something to break through all the circling thoughts, and it took too long to get there. It made the book feel heavier than it needed to be.
And I have to say it, I do not like wishy washy men and proper, honest communication is very important. Some of the relationship dynamics here really tested my patience because of that. It made me wonder how tightly the series follows the book on this respect, especially since I’ve been seeing all the ads for the limited series of this same title that looks so good.
There is depth here, and I respect what the book is trying to do, but it didn’t fully land for me. I wanted more spark, more clarity, and more payoff for all that buildup.
Not bad at all, just not as powerful as it could have been.
★★★½
